Summer is all about outdoor activities and basking in the warm Maltese Islands sunshine. However, it is crucial to prioritise sun care to protect our skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The sun’s rays can lead to sunburns and also to premature ageing. 

In this blog post we will present a string of valuable tips for maintaining a healthy, and radiant skin throughout Summer 2023. 

The Dangers of UV Rays

UV radiation emitted by the sun consists of UVA and UVB rays, both of which can damage our skin.  The UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, causing long-term damage and premature ageing. UVA rays are present throughout the year and can even penetrate clouds – so don’t get tricked by cloudy days!  On the other hand UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and play a significant role in the development of skin cancer. These rays are most intense during the summer months.

Protecting your skin from the sun is paramount for maintaining healthy skin and reducing the risk of sun damage. 

Here are the main reasons why sun protection is essential:

Preventing sunburns: Sunburns are not only painful but also a clear sign of skin damage. Sunburns increase the risk of skin cancer and contribute to premature ageing.

Reducing the risk of skin cancer: Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV radiation can lead to the development of skin cancer. Regular sun protection measures significantly lower this risk.

Minimising premature ageing: UV radiation accelerates the ageing process, causing wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and sagging skin. By protecting your skin from the sun, you can maintain a youthful appearance for longer.

Tips for Effective Sun Care this Summer

To protect your skin from the Maltese summer sun, follow these five sun care tips:

Constantly apply sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed areas (and not), including your face, neck, arms, and legs. When at the beach swimming, it is important to reapply every two hours or less.

Seek shade: Limit your sun exposure, especially during peak hours when the sun’s rays are strongest, namely between 10 HRS and 16 HRS. Seek shade under umbrellas and parasols and put on protective clothing like hats.

Wear protective clothing: Cover your skin with lightweight, tightly-woven clothing that provides additional sun protection. Opt for clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) labels for enhanced UV protection.  In addition, protect your eyes from UV radiation by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.  Always opt for sunglasses labelled as providing full UV protection.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from within. Proper hydration helps maintain the skin’s natural moisture barrier and supports its overall health.  Drink around two litres of water per day!

Check your skin regularly: Perform regular self-examinations to monitor your skin for any changes, such as new moles or growths. Consult a dermatologist if you notice any suspicious or evolving spots.
